Beginner's Guide to a Flawless Freshwater Aquarium

Thinking of starting up a freshwater aquarium? Its a very fun and very rewarding hobby! Here are 4 simple steps to starting up your own freshwater aquarium!

1. Decide what you want to house

Before buying anything at all, take one or multiple trips to your local pet shop and talk to the freshwater expert. He/she will be able to provide you with advice on what kind of critters may or may not work for your lifestyle or scenario. After establishing what will be in your tank and double checking the compatibility, it’s finally time to do some shopping!

      2. Setting Up Your Tank

When buying your marine tank, size matters. It is very easy to get too small of a tank but very hard to get too large. If unsure about tank size, ask an employee or check a Pisces care sheet.

Be sure to check the following off your shopping list:Turquoise Discus No Background

  • Aquarium tank/lid
  • Net
  • Adequate lighting with day/night cycle
  • Underwater heater
  • Thermostat & thermometer
  • Tap water conditioner
  • Proper food
  • Freshwater aquarium salt
  • Filter. Pisces recommends: AquaClear Power Filter
  • Air pump. Pisces recommends: AquaClear Air Pump

      3. Decoration

Decoration is the most fun part of tank set up, where you can really let your creativity fly. Pisces has a huge array of aquarium decorations, from a spectrum of silk plants to dozens of fun and interesting hiding spots and decor. Check to make sure there is not an excess of decorations so your fish can swim freely and nothing is blocking the flow of your filter.

      4. Introducing Livestock to Your New Aquarium

After setting up your tank properly and letting it sit for a day or 2, it is finally time to go pick up your livestock. Upon receiving your fish, follow these simple steps.

  1. Place unopened bags in your aquarium and let them float for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Carefully open the bag up and scoop an equal amount of tank water into the bag. Close bags again and let them float for an additional 15-20 minutes.
  3. Open the bags and scoop the fish out and place into your new aquarium.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy your new aquarium! For more detail and further questions, please visit us in store OR sign up for our Freshwater Seminar here!
