All About the Pac-Man Frog!
Pac-man frogs come in a variety of different colour forms and have great personalities, are relatively easy to care for and make for a great pet. They get their fun name from their round body shape and giant mouth. Natives of South America, these guys are also known as South American Horned Frogs.
Pac-man frogs reach maturity at about a year old. Fully grown males are typically about 2.5-4 inches long while females reach between 3 and 7. A healthy Pac-Man frog will typically live between 6 and 8 years in captivity but can live longer with excellent care.
Pac-Man frogs love to bury themselves in their substrate with only their eyes peeking out. In fact, they will sit this way the majority of the time, unless they are eating. They are definitely not the most active pets so are not a good match if you are looking for a companion animal. It is best to house these guys alone as they can be quite voracious at times.
What Will You Need?:
One of the reasons why Pac-man frogs are so popular is that they do not require a huge amount of space. Pisces suggests keeping these guys in glass terrariums between 10 and 20 gallons. They enjoy a warm, humid environment with deep substrate and places to hide. We recommend using an under tank heater to keep the tank at about 25 degrees Celsius and misting daily to maintain the humidity.
Another reason why they are so popular is that they are not very picky eaters. They can eat a variety of insects and once they are fully grown, the occasional frozen/thawed mouse. Appropriately sized food is very important as these frogs tend to have bigger eyes than their stomachs and can choke on prey that is too large. Young pac-man frogs should be fed daily and adults only once or twice per week. All food should be sprinkled with a calcium supplement and we recommend adding a reptile multivitamin approximately once per week.
Pac-Man frogs are a great option for people looking for an interesting, but less care-intensive pet. Before choosing any pet we recommend doing plenty of research. Our staff will be more than happy to provide you with any information or product recommendations you may be after.
