Despite their physical appearance, okapis are actually more closely related to giraffes than zebras! Native to the tropical rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, okapi are herbivores that feed on leaves, buds, grasses, fruits, and fungi.
- History: Unfortunately, due to several immediate threats including habitat loss, environment fragmentation, and human settlement, okapis are considered an endangered species and their numbers have been steadily declining over the past decade. However, they are a fully protected species legally and multiple wildlife sanctuaries such as the Okapi Wildlife Reserve and Maiko National Park have been set up to try and stabilize their remaining population.
