Fighting Fall Allergies in Dogs - Pisces Pet Emporium

Contrary to popular belief, seasonal allergies are not just confined to the spring. Unfortunately for some dogs, the time of the pretty falling autumn leaves will also bring itching, dry skin and allergic reactions. Dogs that are vulnerable to fall allergies usually have reactions to plants like goldenrod, lamb's quarters, and other nasty plants that release irritating pollen.

What Causes Fall Allergies?

As mentioned above, fall allergies in dogs are caused by offensive pollen released into the air shortly after the summer months have ended. These airborne allergies are not only breathed in, but can also settle within the fur and skin causing some uncomfortable skin irritations. Pollen is not the only cause of fall allergies, ragweed and mold are also known contributors to the fall season allergies. Although not an allergy, we are going to tie in dry/itchy skin caused by the drop in relative humidity in the air.

Signs of an Allergic Pet

If your looking for your dog to start sneezing and grab a tissue like we do, you'll probably miss the signs that your dog is allergic. Dogs display their allergic reaction in a different way than us humans, including:

  • Itchiness
  • Hives
  • Swelling of the face, ears, lips, eyelids, or earflaps
  • Red, inflamed skin
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy ears
  • Chronic ear infections
  • Itchy, runny eyes
  • Constant licking

If you suspect your dog may be having an allergic reaction or is acting out of the ordinary, you should take a trip to the vet. The vet will asses. your dogs symptoms and take a very close look at your dogs skin for signs of irritation.
