What to Know as a First Time Ferret Parent! - Pisces Pet Emporium

So, you are considering becoming a ferret parent? You may have heard numerous things about Ferrets but let us set the record straight, these guys, just like dogs, cats, reptiles, fish, etc. make for great companions. That being said there are several important things to note before rushing over to Pisces Pet Emporium to adopt a Ferret. Getting a Ferret should not be a spontaneous decision, nor should any pet for that matter, so take the time to carefully consider our tips and do further research before bringing in a Ferret as your newest family member.

The Biggest thing you need to ask yourself is do you have the time? Ferrets are very active critters and need at least 3 hours of supervised out of cage exercise a day. This does not all have to be at once as Ferrets enjoy naps throughout the day. A big emphasize needs to be on the word “supervised” as these rascals can easily get into trouble or mischief. Another great thing about Ferrets is that they are social creatures and enjoy playing with other Ferrets. They say once you get one Ferret you can’t stop!

Now the most common thing you may hear is that Ferrets are a smelly pet. Well that is not wrong but do not let that deter you away from these precious creatures. There are ways you help keep on top of the odor which is coming from gland beneath your Ferrets skin. Taking the time to litter box train will be the biggest help in keeping the odor down. Cleaning their cage 1-2 times per month is encouraged as well. It is also important to note that neutered Ferrets rarely release their scent.

Diet is important to know before getting a Ferret. A diet rich in both fats and protein is sometimes difficult to find. A Ferret should never be fed human food, so no protein shakes allowed. A substitute than can be okay if you are unable to track down ferret food is actually kitten food as its high in fats and protein. A vet should be consulted with before just to be safe. A good time to go over diet with your vet is when you take your Ferret in for vaccinations. It important to take your ferret into the vet annually.

Is a Ferret compatible for you and vice versa? May seem like a silly question however it is very important. If you have other pets such as dogs or cats, you need to ask yourself how your current pets are. Are the aggressive or anxious? Then maybe a Ferret is not a great idea for right now. Are they playful and friendly? Then acquainting the two slowly, with a barrier at first, would be suggested. It sure is cute when our pets can get along and play. Also, with cats it will be important to supervise as they could potentially prey on your Ferret. The biggest thing is to introduce your pets slowly and supervise the entire time until your 100% comfortable with them being together. This may take weeks or months or may not be a fit at all.

In short, Ferrets are great pets that have a lot of energy and require high maintence than some others. However if you know you can make time, and don’t mind spending some time litter training, litter cleaning, and monthly pen cleaning you should be just fine being a Ferret parent!
