Drosera rotundifolia, commonly known as the round-leaved sundew or common sundew, is a carnivorous flowering plant that thrives in bogs, marshes, and fens. As one of the most widespread sundew species, it can be found across most of Europe, Siberia, large areas of North America, Korea, Japan, and as far south as eastern China, the Philippines, and New Guinea.
This fascinating plant captures and digests insects drawn to the glistening droplets of sticky, sugar-rich mucilage that coat its leaves. The sundew evolved this carnivorous adaptation to survive in nutrient-poor, often acidic environments where soil nutrients are scarce. Once an insect becomes trapped on the glandular tentacles, the plant secretes enzymes that break down the prey, allowing it to absorb ammonia and other vital nutrients from the insect’s body.
