Maxillaria tenuifolia, commonly known as the Coconut Orchid, is a medium-sized orchid that grows epiphytically or occasionally on the ground. It produces single-flowered stems that release coconut-scented blooms. Flowering in spring, the yellow blossoms measure about 2 inches (5 cm) across. Each flower can last a week to ten days—or even longer if kept in cooler conditions. Its grass-like green foliage remains attractive year-round, making it a beautiful houseplant even when not in bloom. Native to Mexico and Central America, this orchid is found in rainforests and tropical forests with partially deciduous trees, at low elevations from sea level up to 3,300 ft (1,000 m). Easy to grow, Maxillaria tenuifolia is an ideal choice for beginner orchid enthusiasts and a must-have for any collection.
